Peridot is the name given to gem-quality specimens of the mineral Olivine. Finest quality gems come from islands in the Red Sea, but deposits of smaller stones have been found in New Mexico and Arizona. Stones tend to be highly flawless and their brilliant range of green hues have made them extremely popular in the manufacture of jewelry. Peridot is sometimes called the evening Emerald because it appears to lose the yellow highlights of its color at night, thus becoming more Emerald green in tone.Peridot is an August birthstone.
